How we pick

Every shelf on best2027apps names one winner for 2027 and a few alternatives for different needs. The winner is the app we would recommend to a friend who asked "just tell me which one".

The three questions

1. Will you still use it in three months?

Ease of use and daily friction count most. An app that feels like homework gets deleted, however powerful it is.

2. Is the free version real?

We prefer apps whose free tier is useful on its own, and we say clearly when the good part is behind a subscription.

3. Does it do the category's one job best?

A meditation app must make meditating easier; a calorie tracker must make logging food fast and accurate; a language app must keep you practicing.

Where the information comes from

Each company's own website, help pages and app-store listings, read when the shelf is written or updated. When a price matters to the pick we print it with the date we checked it. Otherwise we describe the plan (free, free with limits, subscription), because app prices vary by country and change often.

What we never do

Updates

Shelves are reviewed during the year. Every change to a winner, a price or a feature claim is listed on the updates page with its date.
